Follow up: How do you tell if a message is a scam or not?

If you haven’t read yesterday’s blog post go and take a look at that before reading further otherwise this won’t make much sense.

Shortly after publishing my article yesterday I received an email response from a customer commenting on the article, in essence she pointed out that sometimes using Google or some other search engine to find the phone number for a provider comes with its own dangers.  And she is absolutely right, when you are locating the phone number for a provider, particularly when you are contacting them in response to a suspected scam message you should be quite careful about HOW you obtain that phone number and then question how trustworthy that source of information really is.  For instance I’d trust the phone number printed on my bank statement far more than a number that Google presents to me in a search result.  If I found myself needing to visit the provider’s web site I would likewise be cautious to verify the URL of the website I am browsing.

Have a look at this story from A Current Affair which shows just how easy it is to lose thousands of dollars with this kind of scam.
