Application white-listing is is seen as the gold standard to protect your computer systems from the unknown, this is known as zero-trust.
Unlike anti-virus and anti-malware software which looks for known malware and malware-like behaviour, application white-listing only allows pre-determined software to run on your computer systems, this prevents unapproved software from executing without pre-approval.
This method of application control is a little more administratively burdensome but the level of protection afforded is superior to just about any other method available.
