Should you upgrade your computer to Windows 11?
Windows 11 has been available for a little over a year now but many people have been reluctant to upgrade. If you have a computer made within the last few years and running Windows 10 it is likely you can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. If your computer is older than this it may not have a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) installed or enabled meaning that Windows 11 will not be automatically offered for installation via the automatic Windows update process, but there might still be a way…
If your computer can run Windows 11 you should upgrade to Windows 11, here’s just a few reasons why-
- Windows 11 is faster
- Windows 11 brings improvements to other apps. Microsoft Teams for example is capable of better eye contact adjustments, automatic framing and improved background blur but only when running on Windows 11.
- Windows search is much faster and returns better results
- GUI visual improvements
- Improved start menu, live tiles are gone (for good hopefully!)
- Easier management of multi-monitor setups
Upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 on most computers is really very easy, all you have to do is head over to Windows Updates (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and check for new updates, it should look something like this, just click the Download & install button then sit back and relax.
The upgrade process can take as long as 1-2 hours to complete so do it at a time when you don’t need your computer for anything else. All your programs and files will still be there after the upgrade.
If you don’t see an option to update to Windows 11 or you see a message telling you your computer is not compatible, don’t worry, there may still be a way forward.
Microsoft provide a way to bypass the requirement for a TPM 2.0 module, if you don’t mind tinkering do a web search for the phrase “Upgrade to Windows 11 without TPM”, there’s no shortage of tutorials online.
