It has been revealed that the massive Medibank hack in 2022 can be attributed to a lack of basic cyber security controls. Four years previously in 2018 and again in 2020 they were advised to implement Multi-Factor-Authentication for some of their key systems, this advice was apparently ignored which lead to one of the most significant cyber attacks in Australia. Both their VPN solution and their email systems lacked this simple yet highly effective control which lead to the attackers breaching both systems and ultimately to the theft of highly sensitive and personal information of nearly 10 million people.
